Dear students and teachers,

Good morning!

九月的长春，天高云淡。美丽的吉外校园又迎来了一批风华正茂的新主人。今天，我们在这里隆重举行2020级新生开学典礼。首先，我代表全校师生员工对你们——来自全国各地的3530名本科生、研究生表示热烈的欢迎！同时，向受到表彰的先进集体和优秀个人表示衷心的祝贺！

At this charming autumn season in Changchun, our beautiful JISU welcomes all of these new faces. Today, we are here to hold the opening ceremony for 2020 freshmen. First, on behalf of all the teachers and students, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all: 3,530 undergraduate and graduate students from all over the country. I would also like to express my congratulations to the advanced groups and outstanding individuals who have been commended!

同学们，2020年注定是不平凡的一年。突如其来的新冠肺炎疫情，不仅对经济社会生活带来了剧烈冲击，还深刻改变了既有的国际格局，使世界百年未有之大变局加速演进。面对疫情，全国人民众志成城，取得了抗疫斗争重大战略成果，彰显了中国精神、中国效率、中国力量。成千上万的医护工作者逆行出征；广大志愿者真诚奉献；人民教师坚守三尺讲台……危难面前，每个人都在努力贡献出自己的一份力量，都在自觉担负起自己的一份职责。

2020 is bound to be an extraordinary year. The sudden outbreak of COVID19 has not only brought severe impact on our economy and society, but has also profoundly changed the existing international landscape and accelerated the evolution of the world’s great changes over the past century. In the face of the pandemic, we Chinese people united as one and have made major strategic achievements in the fight against COVID 19, demonstrating the Chinese’ spirit, China’s efficiency, and national strength. Tens of thousands of medical workers risked their own lives to save the lives of others. Vast numbers of volunteers made great contributions. And teachers kept giving lectures to students during this hard time. In the face of crisis, everyone tried, and continues to try, to contribute their own strength and abilities while acknowledging their own responsibilities.

同样，你们在疫情中埋头苦读，经受了高考和疫情的双重考验，磨练了意志，收获了成长。此时此刻，相信你们与我一样，通过这次疫情更加深深地感受到了祖国的伟大！让我们共同向伟大的祖国致敬！向为这次抗疫斗争作出贡献的抗疫英雄们表示衷心的感谢和崇高的敬意！

In the same way, you worked hard against all odds and withstood the daunting challenge of the college entrance examination and pandemic situation. At this moment, I believe that you, like me, can deeply feel the greatness of our motherland through this pandemic! Let’s pay tribute to our great motherland and to the heroes who have contributed to the fight against the pandemic!

同学们，进入大学意味着你们开启了新的人生征程，意味着开始了你们人生最为宝贵的大学生活。同学们，我们为什么来到大学？大学是立德树人、育人的地方；大学可以拓展你们的视野，是学习知识，增长才干，放飞梦想的地方；大学将赋予你们足够的时间和实践，去认真思考怎样的人生才是最有意义的人生，使你们重新树立正确的价值观、人生观、世界观，并为终身学习提供基础；大学可以增加你们对世界的认识，加深理解社会文化的能力以及拥有应对更多变化的能力，特别是在面临问题与挑战时，可以找到更好的解决方法，让自己不断发展和适应社会与世界！

Dear students, entering college means that you have opened a new journey of life and started your most valuable college life. Students, why do we go to college? Because it is the place of nurturing talent and moral education; it is the place where you can expand your horizons, learn knowledge, increase talents, and realize your dreams. In college, you will have enough time and opportunities to seriously think about what kind of life is the most meaningful, so that you can establish correct values, outlook on life, and the world, while also laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning. College can increase your understanding of the world, your ability to understand social culture, and your ability to cope with more changes. Especially in the face of problems and challenges, we can find better solutions to constantly develop and adapt to the society and the world!

同学们，从迈入吉外校园的那一刻起，你们已经永远成为了幸福的吉外人。25年来，吉外发展建设经历了一个艰难，但卓有成效的历程，成为了我国民办高等教育改革发展的见证和缩影。

Dear students, As you step into the campus of JISU, you have become a happy JISUer. During the past 25 years, JISU has traveled a hard yet fruitful journey and is honored to be the witness and epitome of reform in China’s private education.

Our university always adheres to a not-for-profit concept and strives to be a century-old prestigious university. It also adheres to open education and is committed to becoming an international and world-class university with excellent quality. We take it as our responsibility to serve the Belt and Road Initiative and support local socioeconomic development. We are committed to carrying out the most responsible education and cultivating advanced, foreign language talents with an international vision and competence in foreign languages and foreign affairs. After years of unremitting efforts, the university enjoys a good reputation. It has become a key institution of higher learning in Jilin Province, the first private university in China to confer master’s degrees and a doctor’s project construction unit, and the first private institute in China to change its name to a university. At present, the university has been ranked among China’s top private universities. Second to none in China’s private universities for five years in a row, it has ranked first in the list of Chinese private universities in soft subjects in 2020. This year, JISU has been selected as the construction project of a high-level university with characteristics of Jilin Province.

当前，学校正处于改革发展、建设特色高水平大学的关键期。站在新的起点上，全校上下正在同舟共济，二次创业，继往开来，再创辉煌。同学们，你们的加入恰逢其时，为学校增添了新的生机与活力。现在建设特色高水平大学的接力棒已经传到你们手中，你们重任在肩，在你们身上寄托着吉外的未来与希望！我相信，在吉外这座风景如画、朴实厚重的校园，同学们一定可以放飞梦想、成长成才。吉外的岁月，一定会成为你们一生的美好记忆。借此机会，我对同学们提出几点希望，与大家共勉。

At present, the university is in the key period of reform and development and building of the characteristics of a high-level university. Standing at a new beginning, we are working hand in hand to carry on the past and open up a bright future. Students, you are joining JISU at just the right time, adding new vitality to the school. Now, the baton of building a characteristic high-level university has been passed on to you. Our hope is upon you! I believe that in this picturesque campus, you will be able to set sail and succeed. Your life in JISU will certainly become a fond memory for a lifetime. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my expectations of you.

希望同学们坚定理想信念，志存高远。习近平总书记曾深刻指出：“新时代中国青年要树立远大理想。青年的理想信念关乎国家未来。青年理想远大、信念坚定，是一个国家，一个民族，无坚不摧的前进动力”。同学们，没有理想，就没有方向。理想信念对人生历程起着导向的作用，是成就未来的航标。崇高的理想信念能够指引你们在大学期间确定人生目标，形成生活态度，丰富知识才能，设定发展方向。只有理想信念坚定的人，才能始终不渝、百折不挠，坚定不移为实现既定目标而奋斗。同学们要志存高远，立鸿鹄志，要树立与这个时代主题同心同向的理想信念，与时代同步伐，与祖国共命运。只有这样，才能更好的实现人生价值，不断提升人生境界，追逐青春理想，为祖国建设添砖加瓦。同学们，人生的意义只有在服务国家和贡献社会的奋斗中才得以彰显，才能把好人生的方向盘，从中找到人生真谛、生命价值、事业方向，在追梦的路途上行稳致远！

I hope you will stick to your ideals and beliefs and have lofty aspirations. General Secretary Xi Jinping once noted: “Chinese youth in the new era must establish lofty ideals. The ideals and beliefs of the young are related to the future of the country. Their lofty ideals and firm beliefs serve an invincible driving force for a country and a nation.” Dear students, one will be disoriented without ideals. For they, like a beacon for the future, play a guiding role in one’s life path. They can guide you to determine life goals, form life attitudes, enrich knowledge and skills, and set developmental directions during your university time. Only people with firm ideals and beliefs can be persistent to achieve the set goals. You must aim high and establish ideals and beliefs that are in line with the theme of this era to keep pace with the times and share the future with our motherland. Only in this way can you better realize the value of life, improve the realm of life, pursue the ideal of youth, and contribute to the development of the motherland. Dear students, the meaning of life can only be manifested through serving the country and contributing to the society so that you can steer the wheel of life, find the true meaning of life, attain life values and career direction, and embark on a course of smooth sailing of chasing your dreams!

希望同学们励志勤奋学习，奋发有为。古往今来，凡成就事业，对人类有所作为的，无不是脚踏实地，艰苦登攀的结果。当今时代，以互联网+、人工智能、大数据、云计算等新技术为代表的新一轮科技革命正在兴起，同学们将面对的是日趋激烈的国际竞争和人才竞争。创新已经成为引领发展的第一动力，将深刻地影响着人们的学习和生活方式。同学们，你们正处于一个伟大的时代，充满了机遇和挑战。大学的青春时光，人生只有一次。大学生活是苦练本领，增长才干的黄金时期。你们要倍加珍惜宝贵的青春年华，做好人生规划，勤奋学习，强化实践，勇于创新，奋发有为，提高内在素质，锤炼过硬本领，通晓天下道理，掌握事物发展规律。要知道，社会上许多岗位都需要有真才实学，有真正本领的人。不向前，不知道路远；不学习，不明白真理。人生在勤，勤则不匮。立志宜思真品格，读书须尽苦功夫。希望同学们下得苦功夫，求得真学问，打牢知识功底，积蓄前进能量，知行合一，严谨务实，努力把理想变为现实。志不强者智不达。世上无难事，只怕有心人。希望同学们抓住每分每秒，全力以赴，超越自我，赢在未来！

I hope you will study hard and make a difference. Throughout the ages, all achievements and contributions to mankind have been attributed to a down-to-earth and hard-working attitude. In today’s era, a new round of technological revolution represented by new technologies such as Internet+, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, etc. is emerging. You will face increasingly fierce international competition for talent. Innovation has become the foremost driving force for development and will profoundly impact people’s learning and lifestyle. Dear students, you are in a great era, full of opportunities and challenges. You only have one single university life, and it is a golden period of sharpening skills and acquiring knowledge. You must cherish your precious youth, plan your life well, study diligently, intensify your practice, dare to innovate, forge ahead, improve your internal quality, hone your skills, understand the truth of the world, and master the law of development of things. You should know that many jobs in society require people with real talents and skills. One will fail to know the length of the path if he or she does not move forward. Likewise, one will fail to understand the truth if he or she does not study. One must be diligent in life. When setting up lofty aspirations, we should conduct ourselves properly. When we study, we should work hard and do our best. I hope you will work hard, acquire true learning, lay a solid foundation in knowledge, prepare for the way ahead, base your action on knowledge, be rigorous and pragmatic, and strive to turn ideals into reality. Those who are weak-willed cannot give full measure to their wisdom. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. I hope you will race against time, go all out, outdo yourselves, and secure the future!

希望同学们锻造道德品格，追求卓越。孙中山先生说：“做人最大的事情就是要知道怎么样爱国”。爱国之心，实为一国之命脉。希望同学们热爱祖国，这是大德。养大德者，方可成大业。这是立身之本、成才之基。马顿有一句名言：“唯有品德可以开成功之门，收成功之果。”你们要坚守立德的正心，坚持品德为先，因为道德是做人的根本。才者，德之资也；德者，才之帅也。做人做事第一位的是崇德修身，道德品质是衡量一个人综合素质的标准。品格能决定人生，它比天资更重要。希望你们艰苦奋斗，不贪图安逸，不惧怕困难，不怨天尤人，磨练意志，乐观向上，诚实守信，文明礼貌，热爱公益，砺志敦材，追求卓越；希望你们学会勤俭，学会劳动，学会感恩，学会谦让，学会宽容，学会自律。希望你们锻造道德品格，注重道德实践，打牢道德根基，不断修身立德，内化于心，外化于行，从小处着眼，把身边每一件小事做到最好，严格要求自己，在学习知识的同时砥砺品性，践行“天下大事必从细而做”。你们要牢记“青年的价值取向，决定了未来整个社会的价值取向”。只有这样，你们才能在人生道路上走的更正，走的更远！

I hope you will forge your moral character and pursue excellence. Mr. Sun Yat-sen once said: “The most important thing in being a man is to know how to love one’s own country.” Patriotism is the lifeblood of a country. I hope you love our motherland, which is a great virtue. Only those who cultivate great virtue can deliver a great cause. This is the foundation of one's life and success. MartonCsokas, a celebrated New Zealand actor, famously said: “Only moral character can open the door to success and receive the fruit of success.” You must stick to the righteousness of morality and put moral character first because morality is the foundation of one’s life. Talent is the aid of morality; morality is the commander of talent. The first thing to do is to cultivate moral character, for it is the standard to measure a person's comprehensive quality. Character can determine life, so it is more important than talent. I hope you will be a person of diligence, bravery, strong will, optimism, honesty, politeness, public welfare, high aspiration, and excellence. I hope you will learn to be a person of frugality, good skills, gratefulness, humility, tolerance, and self-discipline. I hope you forge your moral character, act upon morality, continue to cultivate moral character in word and deed, pay attention to details, do the best in every small matter, and exercise strict self-discipline. I also hope that you can foster your personality and practice the idea that “little things make big things happen” while acquiring knowledge. You must keep in mind that “the value orientation of youth determines that of the entire society in the future.” Only in this way can you continue on smoother and further on the road of life!

同学们, 大学时光看似挺长，但回头看无一不感慨短暂而宝贵。心有所信，方能行远。知之愈深，行之愈坚。希望你们早日成才、成功！成功不在于有无天资，而在于有无理想。人所缺乏的不是才干，而是志向；不是成功的能力，而是勤劳的意志。成功是内心的造就！不断的奋斗，就是成功！正所谓：有志者事竟成！

Dear students, university time seems to be quite long, but when people look back, all feel that time flies and is precious. Only people who believe they can go further will go further. The deeper the understanding, the firmer the belief. I hope you will become talented and achieve success! Success relies more on ideals than on talents. What people often lack is not talent, but ambition; they who succeed are not based on one’s capability, but diligence. Success is self-driven. Continuous struggle is what success truly means! As the saying goes: Where there is a will, there is a way!
